The Cabrini Asylum Seeker and Refugee Health Hub Specialist Mental Health Service is able to provide secondary consultation to mental health clinicians, general practitioners and other health professionals working with people seeking asylum.
These secondary consultation sessions can be provided on a regular or ad hoc basis by arrangement, and can be conducted with mental health clinicians or psychiatrists.
Secondary consultation can provide an opportunity to discuss the following in relation to the presentation of specific clients:
- Access to services for people seeking asylum, including the practical implications and barriers;
- Clinical approach and engagement with people seeking asylum;
- The psychological impacts of trauma, detention and protracted uncertainty related to government policies affecting people seeking asylum and how this might present clinically;
- Clinical advice on differential diagnoses and treatment (including prescribing for medical practitioners).
If you require an urgent response, for example advice about a person whom you believe is at high imminent risk of suicide, we recommend that you contact your area acute mental health service.
To request a secondary consultation session with one of our mental health practitioners, please email healthhub@cabrini.com.au with your request, outlining your role, scope of practice and the type of consultation required. We will endeavour to respond to your request within 14 days.
